FEPS members gathered on 10 May for one of the highlights of the Society's year, the Digital Image of the Year Competition.
With Keith Adams BPE3* of Ealing and Hampshire House Photographic Society acting as judge we were all looking
forward to an entertaining and informative evening. And Keith did not disappoint. The volume of entries was high, getting on for 70 images, but Keith
handled the situation with his customary good humour and perceptive judgment.
A sporting theme emerged from Keith's final selection. Top spot was awarded to Gordon Phillipps for his action shot of a canoeist. Gordon's image, seen here on the right, had already won the Set Subject competition on Motion Blur earlier in the season, so he knew he was a strong contender. The beautifully blurred background gives tremendous dynamism to the image as well as showcasing Gordon's creative talent.
In second place, sticking with the sporting theme, was Craig Bellis' image of a gymnast on the rings equipment, seen on the left. Here we have power again,
but of a quite different kind. Craig has captured the essence of this gymnastic discipline perfectly. The controlled, calm expression of the gymnast
combined with the power which is so very evident in his body.
The sporting mould was broken with Keith's choice of third place, which was awarded to Craig Poltock's
close-up image of a bird of prey. Here we have power again, but of the animal variety. Who would want to get close to that fearsome looking beak! Craig is
competing in his first season at Field End, which goes to prove that newcomers have just as much opportunity to get the top slots
as old club hands.
Many congratulations to Gordon and the two Craigs on their success.
