When FEPS held its third internal digital competition of the season on 24 January Judge Peter Mylchreest of Imagez was faced with the daunting task of scoring 100 images in Class 2
(beginners and intermediates) and 35 images in Class 1 (experts).
The room was packed - we are very pleased that a number of new members have joined the club this season. The air of anticipation was palpable as the judging got underway. Peter rose to the occasion effortlessly,
although the standard of entries was particularly high in both Classes and settling on the top placings posed him a few dilemmas.
The theme of death was very much to the fore in the winning images in Class 2, which was judged first. Peter selected Jeff Haynes' very moving image "Death Camp Crematorium" (seen left) as the worthy winner. Jeff explained, "In December last year a group of us went to Weimar in the former East Germany. One of the places we visited was Buchenwald Concentration Camp. It had been snowing heavily the day before and we arrived on a chilly Monday morning, -17 degrees C. Apart from us the whole memorial site was deserted. It was incredible to be able to wander round this remarkable place, where so many lives were lost and so much suffering went on. Between 1937 and 1945 more than 250,000 were imprisoned there, some 56,000 of whom were either killed, starved to death, or died as a result of medical experiments.
My main picture was taken from outside the perimeter fence and shows the crematorium with its stark red brick chimney, The building in the background is where the medical experiments were carried out." Below are two other images of the camp ovens taken by Jeff. Flowers and messages are often left by the visitors and Jeff's image on the left portrays the single carnation laid in one of the ovens.
The theme of death continued as Peter settled on Frank Darnell's beautiful image of a cormorant with wings outstretched "A Fisherman's Angel of Death" as his second choice. Brian Tinsey's photograph entitled "Dead Limb and Lichen" came a commendable third.
Peter chose more colourful images for his Class 1 winners. Marilyn Dennis with "Common Blue" depicting a gorgeous damselfly came first, followed by Beech Canopy by Simon Roulstone in second place and Thermal Pool by Ted Weller in third place. Many congratulations to all the winners.
